Who is this that grows like the dawn, as bright as the sun, as fair as the moon? Who is this that grows like the dawn, as awesome as an army, as an army with banners? It is the church in the eyes of the Lord, the bride of Christ preparing for her King. Washed in his blood and clothed in righteousness, anointed with the Spirit and waiting for her Lord.
This song, penned by Phil Rogers and found in the Songs of Fellowship book as number 608 (Psalms 20:5, Song of Songs 6:4,10, Revelation 7:14, 19:8), serves as a catalyst for delving into the multifaceted concept of the church. When we invoke the term ‘church,’ a diverse array of interpretations emerge. For some, it may evoke images of a physical structure, while for others, the focus might shift to the individuals comprising the church.
What is church?
In the exploration of this term, it’s essential to consider the Greek word “ekklesia,” highlighted in passages such as Matthew 16:18 or Ephesians 1:22-23, both commonly translated as ‘church’ in English. Notably, the New Testament does not emphasize the physical place of worship. Instead, it consistently underscores the assembly of people, illustrating that the essence of the ‘church’ lies primarily in the community gathered rather than the physical edifice.
Jesus emerged as a profound disruptor, challenging not only the foundations of the Jewish faith but also the entire landscape of organized religions. As the promised Messiah, he held significance for both the Jewish community and the broader world, despite encountering rejection from many. However, for those who embraced him as ‘My Lord and My God,’ a transformative movement took root, reshaping both society and the world.
In the early days when Jesus’ disciples gathered, they did not identify as Christians. Instead, they humbly referred to themselves as “people of the way.” It was those who opposed this emerging community that coined the term ‘Christians’ for Jesus’ followers, a label that has endured through the ages. This shift in nomenclature marked a pivotal moment, solidifying the identity of those who walked in the way of Jesus and leaving an indelible mark on the course of history.
It’s all about you!
You know, when I talk about the Church of Christ, I’m not talking about which denomination you belong to. It’s about all of us around the world who are followers of Jesus, we make up the church. So, the next time someone throws the “which church do you go to?” question at you, just hit them with a smile and say, “I am His Church.” It’s not about a building or a specific group; it’s about being a part of the global crew of Jesus’ disciples.
Wherever you go, you’re the church. Let that idea be the fuel for who you are in Jesus, not tied to any particular denomination. And let this identity mold your faith, recognizing Jesus as “My Lord and My God.”
As you kick off the new year, may God shower you with blessings, peace, and joy โ just like Jesus promised through the Holy Spirit. Here’s to a year filled with all the good stuff! stay strong๐ช, stay blessed๐!
